Topic: Journaling Methods and Benefits
In a recent edition of From The Pen Nib, I suggested using a balanced approach to writing in your journal by including both the negative and the positive.
While there are no set rules for what or how much you should write, you'll find writing easier and more beneficial if you use a balanced approach.
If you dwell on journaling negative thoughts, you may soon dread journaling.
When I write my negative thoughts, it clears the air. Then, I have more room for positive thoughts. You can do this intentionally. For example, you can write about your problems and also brainstorm solutions.
Writing only positive thoughts ignores many points on the spectrum of emotions.
I consider myself a positive person. I intentionally show others this side of my personality. But I’m more complex than my greetings and smiles suggest. I won’t burden you with my problems; you will find them in my journal.
Using a balanced approach teaches you self-awareness. Writing about your full range of emotions teaches you what makes you happy, sad, overwhelmed, angry, or excited.
I write the same thoughts I would tell my closest confidant. Those words include the mundane, the grand, the negative, and the positive about any subject. Don't let any of those thoughts or emotions get ignored. But try not to let one emotion outweigh the others unless it’s positive.
I learned from writing gratitude that positivity grows with practice.
When writing, include the negative and the positive, then lean into the positive so it will grow.
